I chose this picture to represent the events in the novel between chapters six through twelve.  The picture depicts water dashing against the rocks, relentlessly, over an over again.  After a while, the rocks eroded because of the constant pressure imposed on them by the water.  These rocks represent the main character, Mariam’s, difficulties in the novel.  In these chapters, her life has been turned almost upside down in a very short time.  Her father doesn’t love her, her mother committed suicide, and Mariam has been married against her will.  Like the rocks in the picture, she started off rigid and strong, but was worn down by trail after trial, just as the water wears down the rocks.  Mariam will resist the eforces acting against her, like the rocks resist the water, but over time, she has been worn down by hardships.  Hopefully, she will not be so worn down by the end of the story that she will just fade away, as eventually the rocks will under the relentless onslaught of the water.
