Summary: During these chapters, Mariam tells Laila to take Zalamai, and Aziza, with her and Tariq and to leave Kabul. Mariam tells Laila that she will take the blame for Rasheed’s death since she killed him, and that she wants nothing in return. Laila leaves with Tariq and her children and never sees Mariam again. Mariam is then taken to a women’s prison, and at her trial is sentenced to death, for have killing her husband. A few days later, she is killed on front of hundreds of people.
Analysis: Once Mariam kills Rasheed, Laila and her realize they have to leave Kabul. Mariam decides to turn herself in, because she doesn’t want to risk Laila losing her life as well. Laila tries to talk Mariam out of it, however, Mariam feels that is all she can give Laila in return for her long and loving friendship. Once Laila and her children leave with Tariq, Mariam turns herself in. She isn’t even afraid, once she has been given the death sentence for killing her husband. In her final moments, she looks back on her life realizing that is wasn’t that kind to her, however feels thankful for having Laila in her life.
