Summary: During these chapters, Laila learns that Tariq was actually captured by the Taliban and put in a prison for many years. He ended up getting out, and now had a job and a place to live. During their visit, Laila also tells Tariq about his daughter, and he says that he wants to meet her. Later, after the visit, Zalmai, tells his father of Tariq visiting. Rasheed starts beating Laila after hearing this news, and then tries to kill her. In Laila’s defense, Mariam ends up killing Rasheed by hitting him over the head with a shovel just to get him to stop strangling Laila.
Analysis: As Mariam hears what Tariq has gone through, she is in awe. She is overwhelmed with happiness to see him again, and still can’t believe Rasheed has kept his existence from her for so long. However, once Zalmai tells Rasheed of Tariq’s visit, Rasheed flips out and starts beating Laila. He even tries killing her. Once Laila is sure she is near death, Mariam in her defense hits Rasheed over the head with a shovel, hoping to save Laila’s life, but killing Rasheed, dooming herself.
