Summary: In these chapters,
it starts with Mariam recounting her first days with Rasheed in Kabul. How she stayed in her room all the time and
Rasheed would check on her making sure that she was all right. Finally Mariam decides to unpack and roam
around the house. She makes a soup for
Rasheed and leaves the house to go shopping.
Outside of the house, she is overwhelmed by the people and all the houses,
and gets lost and can’t find her way home.
When Rasheed gets home and eats the soup Mariam prepared they decide to
go the next day to the city. Rasheed
gives Mariam a burqa for he to wear because he believes a women’s face is the
husband’s property and then they go out to tour Kabul. After they return, Mariam and Rasheed have
sex in Mariam’s room. In these chapters,
the Ramadan occurs and Mariam recalls Rasheed’s sour and mean moods. After the Ramadan was a joyous holiday, Eid
when Rasheed’s friends would come over and sip tea and Mariam would hide in her
bedroom when they came. While upstairs, Mariam
sneaks into Rasheed’s room and sees that he has pornography and a gun in his
drawers. She also finds a picture of
Rasheed’s son that had died and realizes that he also had a hard life.
Analysis: In
these chapters we see how nice of a husband Rasheed was to Mariam, he would
give her presents and help her slowly adjust to this new life of hers. We also see Mariam’s loneliness and confusion
to her new life when entering the city.
Also, Rasheed’s patriarchal views are shown when he makes her wear a
burqa because her beauty and face was his property. Mariam also, finally comes out of this shell
of shyness
